Local Conditions

What Makes Newton Different.

Water

What comes out of the tap

Newton is on MWRA water, so the tap is soft at about one grain per gallon and rarely spots glass on its own. When Newton windows look hazy the usual causes are tree pollen and sap in spring, irrigation overspray in summer and traffic film year round on houses near Route 9, Washington Street and the Pike. A scrub and a deionized rinse take all of it off, and the glass stays clear until the next season of it.

Roofs and trees

What grows on the house

Mature oaks, maples and lindens line most Newton streets, and Crystal Lake, Hammond Pond, Bullough's Pond and the Charles River keep the shaded sides of nearby houses damp. That is why so many north-facing roofs and gables in Newton carry a green tint by August. Slate is common on the Victorians and Tudors of Chestnut Hill and West Newton Hill, and slate wants a no-pressure treatment that kills the growth and lets weather do the rest. Asphalt roofs elsewhere in the city get the same approach.

Rules and access

What to know before we come

Newton has four local historic districts with their own commissions: Newton Upper Falls, Chestnut Hill, Newtonville and Auburndale, covering close to nine hundred properties. A Certificate of Appropriateness is required to change any exterior feature visible from a public way, including replacement windows and siding. Cleaning is maintenance and is not reviewed. Street parking is tight in Newtonville and Newton Centre, so for those jobs we arrive early, park once and carry water to the back of the house rather than blocking a driveway.

Straight Answers

Newton Homeowners Ask Us.

Which Newton villages do you actually cover?

All thirteen. Newton Corner and Nonantum are five minutes from our base, and Waban, Oak Hill and Chestnut Hill are about fifteen. There is no travel charge anywhere in the city.

Can you clean the divided-light windows on a Newton Centre Victorian?

Yes. True divided lights are cleaned pane by pane with a hand tool sized for the glass, and old glazing putty is never soaked. It takes longer than a modern window, and the quote reflects that honestly.

What is the best time of year for exterior cleaning in Newton?

Late May, once the oak and maple pollen has finished, and again in November after the leaves are down. Roof treatments work best in warm weather when the moss is actively growing.

Do you work with property managers and household staff?

Yes. We send the certificate of insurance and a written scope ahead of the visit, and we can coordinate access and scheduling with whoever runs the house.
