What We Clean on a Winchester Home.

Window cleaningInterior and exterior, storms and screens included, finished with a pure-water rinse so nothing dries into a spot.
House washingLow-pressure soft washing that takes algae and mildew off clapboard and shingle without forcing water behind the boards.
Roof cleaningSlate treated with a no-pressure solution and never walked. Asphalt roofs on the newer houses get the same approach.
Gutter cleaningCopper cleaned with pH-neutral products that will not etch or streak it, aluminum cleared by hand, all downspouts flushed.
Pressure washingDriveways, walks, patios and the salt residue that Main Street and Cambridge Street traffic leaves on lower masonry each winter.
Lakefront elevationsThe water-facing side of a Mystic Lakes house cleaned more often than the rest, because that is the side that goes green.
Local Conditions

What Makes Winchester Different.

Water

What comes out of the tap

Winchester blends two sources: roughly sixty percent MWRA water and forty percent from the town's own treatment plant, fed by reservoirs in the Middlesex Fells off South Border Road. Both are soft, so the tap rarely spots glass. Spotting in Winchester comes from lawn irrigation hitting the windows and from screens washing dust onto the panes in the rain. A scrub and a deionized rinse remove it and leave the glass clear until the next season.

Roofs and trees

What grows on the house

The Upper and Lower Mystic Lakes, Wedge Pond, Winter Pond and the Aberjona River put moisture in the air, and the Fells put oak and pine over the roofs. Lakeside houses grow algae and mildew on the water-facing wall. Fells-side houses collect needles, acorns and moss on the north slope. The slate on Wedgemere and Everett Avenue houses is treated without pressure and left for the rain to rinse, because the fastest way to crack a hundred-year-old slate roof is to walk on it or blast it.

Rules and access

What to know before we come

Winchester has no local historic district. Wedgemere and the other districts are National Register listings, which recognize the houses but do not restrict maintenance. The town's demolition delay bylaw applies to structures built before 1941 and is handled by the Historical Commission, and it has nothing to do with cleaning. Driveways near the center are short and the streets are busy on school mornings, so we schedule those jobs after nine and park once for the day.

Straight Answers

Winchester Homeowners Ask Us.

The side of my house facing the Mystic Lakes is green. Can that be fixed?

Yes. That is algae and mildew fed by lake humidity. A soft wash removes it at garden-hose pressure, and treating that elevation once a year keeps it from coming back as thick.

Do you clean slate roofs and copper gutters?

Yes. Slate gets a no-pressure treatment applied from the edge and the ladder, and copper is cleaned with products chosen so they will not etch or discolor the metal.

Is there any historic approval needed to wash a Wedgemere house?

No. Winchester has no local historic district, and the National Register listing places no restrictions on cleaning or maintenance.

Can you do the windows on a three-story Victorian without ladders on the gutters?

Yes. Upper glass is cleaned with water-fed poles from the ground, and where a ladder is needed we use stand-offs so nothing rests on the gutters or the trim.
