What Makes Lincoln Different.

Water

What comes out of the tap

Lincoln runs its own water system, not the MWRA, drawing from Flint's Pond through a micro-filtration plant with the Tower Road well as a daily supplement. The pond water is relatively soft. The well water and the roughly four hundred residents on private wells along Old County Road and Conant Road get more minerals, which dry as spots on glass. We rinse every exterior pane with deionized water from our own tank, so it makes no difference which supply the house is on. Every lot is on septic, so the tank also keeps us from putting hundreds of gallons of wash water into the ground beside the leach field.

Roofs and trees

What grows on the house

Lincoln has the heaviest canopy of any town we serve. Oak, white pine and hemlock around Walden Pond, Flint's Pond, Farrar Pond, Mount Misery and the Sudbury River keep roofs shaded and drop sap and needles all year. Moss and lichen colonize cedar shakes and asphalt on the north side, and algae grows on the shaded vertical siding of the modern houses. Pitched roofs get a no-pressure treatment. The flat roofs on Woods End Road and Brown's Wood are walked only where the membrane is sound, cleaned by hand, and left with clear drains, because a blocked drain on a flat roof is the fastest route to a leak.

Rules and access

What to know before we come

Woods End Road is a local historic district and the Lincoln Historical Commission reviews demolitions townwide. Cleaning is not reviewed by either. Houses under Historic New England stewardship or in the district get the gentlest methods we have, which is what we would use on original glass and old wood anyway. Two-acre zoning means long drives through the trees. We park once near the house and carry equipment in rather than turning the truck on lawn or root zones.

Straight Answers

Lincoln Homeowners Ask Us.

Can you clean the glass on a modern house near the Gropius House without damaging the original panes?

Yes. We hand-scrub with soft brushes, rinse with deionized water and never use a blade on original, coated or tinted glass. Most scratches on mid-century glass come from someone else's razor.

My house on Conant Road is on a well. Will you spot my windows?

No. The final rinse comes from our own filtered tank, not your well, and we can remove the mineral stains that well-fed sprinklers have already left.

Why does my roof grow moss so quickly?

Because Lincoln is mostly woods, and a shaded roof stays damp for days after rain. An annual no-pressure treatment in warm weather keeps shakes and shingles clear and stops the moss from lifting them.

How do you schedule Lincoln jobs?

In clusters with Concord and Lexington so the drive from Brighton is used well. Most Lincoln houses are a full day for a two-person crew, and larger properties on two acres or more are usually two.
